Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a condition that affects the hand and wrist. It is caused by compression of the median nerve as it passes through the carpal tunnel. The carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway located on the palm side of the wrist. It is formed by bones and ligaments. Importantly, the median nerve controls the movement and sensation in the thumb, index finger, middle finger, and half of the ring finger.
Symptoms
Symptoms of CTS include numbness, tingling, weakness, and pain in the hand and wrist. Furthermore, pins and needles can radiate down to the hand and up the arm. The pain is often worse at night. In addition, symptoms can cause difficulty with fine motor tasks such as writing, typing, or buttoning clothing.
Causes
There are several factors that can contribute to the development of CTS. These include genetics, injury, certain medical conditions (such as rheumatoid arthritis or diabetes), and repetitive motions of the hand and wrist (such as typing or using a mouse). Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is very common during and after pregnancy.
Treatment
Treatment options for CTS include non-surgical and surgical options. Non-surgical options (also called conservative management) include splinting, physical therapy, and medications to reduce inflammation and pain. Surgical options include carpal tunnel release, which involves cutting the ligament that forms the top of the carpal tunnel to relieve pressure on the median nerve.
At AMR Physiotherapy, our Hand Therapist will help you with the diagnosis, and conservative management and if needed will provide guidance with surgical referrals.
If you are experiencing symptoms of CTS, it is important to seek the advice of a healthcare professional. An early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can help to prevent the condition from progressing and causing further damage to the median nerve.
